What is an Operating System?

An operating system is an essential component of software that runs on computing devices. Its function is to control device memory and processes. It also enables users to interact with devices.

Due to the advancement of technology, operating systems have also developed and progressed. Operating systems come in different types, but you may find various computer systems fall into more than one type. The most common types of operating systems include GUI, multi-user, multiprocessing, multitasking and multithreading. Graphical User Interface is an operating system that makes use of icons, graphics or other indicators to communicate with devices.

Examples include Windows CE, System 7.x and Windows 98. As the name suggests, a multi-user system enables operators to a network and use a device at the same time. Examples of operating systems under this category include Unix, Linux and Windows 2000.

A multiprocessing system is able to support and make use of more than one processor. An operating system that allows various software processes to run simultaneous is known as the multitasking. Windows 8, Linux and Unix fall under this type of operating system.

As humans, we don’t function in a binary level, there must be something that can help us to understand and make sense when we use computing devices. Operating systems were designed for that purpose.

The Windows operating system is famous for its ubiquity, you can use a computer just anywhere in the world. It is also considered user-friendly by most of its users. Linux is rated as user-modifiable and its applications are easily accessible to the public.
